Dying Light è un action survival in prima persona. Il gioco è ambientato in un enorme e pericolosissimo mondo aperto. Di giorno vagherai in uno scenario urbano devastato da una misteriosa epidemia, cercando scorte e creando armi per sconfiggere le orde di ottusi nemici assetati di carne che sono stati generati dal contagio. Di notte, gli infetti si faranno più forti e aggressivi, e il cacciatore diventerà preda. Ma le creature più letali saranno gli esseri notturni, predatori non umani che si allontanano dalle loro tane per sfamarsi.
